Beta 0.2 - New Game Mode! It's a little prettier! It's also too big to work in a browser anymore :(

Okay so first, an important note: I got told there were too many files in my HTML .zip, so this game has become a download far sooner than I expected. For the next update I'll make a smaller version of the game so that you can at least get a taste of it before downloading, but I need to figure out how I can do that without making a big mess of my project.

Now for the fun part, the biggest aspect of this update is a NEW GAME MODE:

  1. SOLDIER SURVIVAL: Instead of playing as a tank, play as a Soldier (surprise surprise) in a much larger map with unique areas to explore.
  2. This mode features different enemies & weapons, a different weapon system (instead of equipping an additional weapon to your basic gun, you equip one at a time), and a different health economy.
  3. MINIBOSS! I plan to make more, and implement them into both game modes, but there's one to find right now in Soldier Mode. The big health bar above him will let you know when you're looking at him.
  4. Right now there are four main areas: The church you spawn in, a poison gas field to the south, and a system of trenches to the east that leads into the barracks. The poison gas, for obvious reasons, is dangerous to traverse, but maybe elsewhere you can find an item to help you through it...

It's a fairly bare-bones mode for now, but I think there's enough to it for a proof of concept for now. In time I hope to add newer areas, more weapons & items, and even a quest that leads to a way for you to win the mode.

Some changes have also been made to the gameplay in the original Tank mode:

  1. NEW ENEMY: The MineMann is a small tank that  occasionally rolls horizontally across the screen, leaving dangerous proximity mines in its wake.
  2. NEW WEAPON: MORTAR CANNON. Killing the MineMann gets you ammo for a deadly new weapon type. After a small delay, the Mortar Cannon drops a large explosion directly on your cursor position.  For obvious reasons, it's very powerful, so keep an eye out for those MineManns!
  3. Maximum Firebomb count has been increased to 2
  4. Firebombs now harm GatlingMann, which they were supposed to in the first place (your basic weapon however does not and is not supposed to; I've added a specific sound effect which hopefully communicates that)
  5. FireMann health has been reduced to 11
  6. Maximum Health now increases by 2 points every 3 levels, with a cap at 30 when you reach Max Level.
  7. Repair pickups can no longer be picked up unless they can apply the full amount of healing (+4), because for some reason once I added the ability for Max health to change, they would just go above that maximum health, so this was a compromise. For some reason this works fine on the Soldier Mode; I tried a lot of changes to get it to work properly here but I think I've been looking at it for too long, so hopefully I'll look at it again in a few days and be able to see the problem easily.

I've also made some visual changes:

  1. Everything now follows a more strict colour scheme, which will hopefully make everything feel a little more consistent, if not prettier. Bullets should contrast a little better with the floor, making them easier to see.
  2. The player's tank has been redesigned
  3. Weapon logos in the UI are now animated when equipped
  4. A health bar!
  5. ...Passchendaele is now spelled correctly.

Plans for the next update:

  1. A new Tank Mode enemy that drops an armor pickup.
  2. More Minibosses for both modes.
  3. A new area for Soldier Mode that makes the Shotgun useful
  4. A redesign for the Tank Mode's level, probably a bit larger, possibly also with some kind of random generation of environmental elements.
  5. Probably more balancing and visual changes, because work in that area is never finished, is it?

To anyone who has played Passchendaele so far, from the bottom of my heart, thank you :) it's not much but I'm having a hell of a time making it, and I'm already applying what I've been learning to another game that's closer to the thing I downloaded a Game Engine to make in the first place, so any feedback I receive on this is immeasurably valuable :)
